At the invitation of the Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, OIEP Director Mengxue Li represented the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the White House on September 25, 2015.  The occasion was the State Arrival Ceremony given by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in honor of His Excellency President Xi Jingping of China and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan.  Convened on the famous South Lawn of the White House, the pageantry and protocol of the ceremony included a 21-gun salute, a military honor guard review by the two heads of state, and formal remarks delivered by President Obama and President Xi.

"I'm extremely gratified," Dr. Li said after the event, "because my attendance at the White House event reflects the strong links BSOS has built with China over the years, as well the confidence the Chinese embassy places in its growing relationship with OIEP."

The timing of the Obama-Xi summit—a landmark in U.S.-China relations—was symbolically significant for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences: just days before, UMD President Wallace Loh approved and signed a five-year cooperative agreement with Nanjing Normal University—a milestone in OIEP’s efforts to bring BSOS to the world and the world to BSOS.
