OIEP Director Mengxue Li introduced former U.S. ambassador to Vietnam David Shear at an event on October 9, 2018.  The occasion was the inaugural event in the Global Conversations series organized by UMD's Global Communities Living-Learning Program.

In his talk—which was moderated by the director of Global Communities, Prof. Virginia Haufler—the retired career diplomat delivered an incisive tour d'horizon on the geopolitics and economics of twenty-first century Asia, with emphasis on the centrality of U.S.-China bilateral relations.  He also addressed the challenges facing Vietnam as it attempts to balance relations with both China and the United States.

Following his opening remarks, Ambassador Shear responded to a series of prepared questions from Dr. Haufler and engaged in a lively exchange with the audience.

In welcoming Ambassador Shear on behalf of UMD and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, Dr. Li thanked him for "helping to educate a new generation of international relations and diplomatic affairs professionals."  Judging from the enthusiastic questions posed—and concluding applause given—by the assembled students, the ambassador's presentation was a notable success.
