To GEOG Graduate Students:
We are in a very difficult time for a number of reasons, and it's not as easy for our graduate students as we would like it to be. On top of the isolation that you are facing associated with COVID there is the troubling news from around the world, and the very disturbing recent police brutality and ensuing public outrage and demonstrations. I'm concerned about our international students, particularly those from China, who might be anxious and worrying about the recent heated rhetoric.
I want to let you know that as Chair, I am fully committed to ensuring that all our Graduate students and especially our international students can continue and complete their studies at Maryland and I know the Campus leadership feels the same way. If you have a visa that's about to expire or that needs renewing in the next 12 months, please contact ISSS on how to best deal with that. Please keep us apprised of any associated visa-related issues that might cause hardship for you.
As we move into summer, if any of you have work concerns, personal worries or financial difficulties, please do not hesitate to reach out to your Academic Advisor to share what is troubling you, or to Dr. Sun as Graduate Director or myself, rather than being on your own and worrying. Worrying doesn't help.
We are here to help you and will do everything we can in your best interest.
